Live Performance Debut

  • National Gallery of Art, East Garden Court Constitution Avenue Northwest Washington, DC United States (map)

After a successful screening run of the short film version of the project in over 15 cities across the U.S. in 2021, When We Gather will be performed live for the first time at the National Gallery of Art on April 30th, 2022, as part of the programming around the groundbreaking Afro-Atlantic Histories exhibition.

The performance will be led by María Magdalena Campos-Pons, featuring Dell Marie Hamilton and Jana Harper, two of the original artists in the When We Gather film, as well as new collaborating artists, Sue-Ann Letta Forde, Stephanie Mercedes, Helina Metaferia, and Jessica Sandhu. Read more about the artists here.

The piece will be performed twice, at 1 pm and 3 pm, each time running about 20 minutes. The performance will start in the East Garden Court of the museum, and proceed to the steps of the museum’s National Mall entrance. Admission is free and open to the public, and no prior registration is necessary. More information can be found on the National Gallery of Art’s website.

The performance was made possible by major support from the Phyllis & Jerome Lyle Rappaport Foundation and a grant from the Alice L. Walton Foundation. Additional generous support was provided by the Carl M. Freeman Foundation, Craig and Kathryn Hall, and Leah R. Bennett.

In anticipation of the live performance, we have made the original film available for viewing online through April 30. Please visit our Eventbrite page here to register and watch. Enjoy!
