Participatory Actions

Gathering Ancestors: Her Name

Adapted from When We Gather movement score by Okwui Okpokwasili

Think of a woman who has had or is having a deep impact on shaping who you are. She’s been your teacher, your child, your mother, your aunty, your helpmate, your lover, a beacon on a starless night leading you safely to shore. When you think of her, her name rises up in you on a flood of feelings.

Close your eyes, take three breaths in that feeling. Hear her ask you, ‘Where are we going?’ ‘A dónde vamos?’ Say her name as you answer her. (tell your ancestor specifically where you want to go with her…)

Say her name as you answer, for example: “Aunty Mary, we are going for a pedicure.”

Gathering Momentum: The Clock

Adapted from When We Gather movement score by Okwui Okpokwasili

Think of a clock…

For this action, imagine you are the dial in the center of a 12 hand clock face.

You will move counterclockwise from 12 to 9 to 6 to 3 and back to twelve. If you prefer to turn clockwise, modify the score to fit your directional preference.

The movement will be initiated from the eyes, the head will follow and then the body.

Spin as many times as you want, speaking the prompts as you go.

Can You Stay Standing?

If your body can stand, stand up; if you are in a wheelchair, disengage the brakes; if you use a walking aid, engage and modify as is right for you.

Facing the camera, begin recording in horizontal mode.

Gathering Connection: Our Hands

Invitation to Re-negotiate Zoom Borders by Magda Campos-Pons

STEP 1: Face your camera and begin recording.
STEP 2: Making sure your face is visible, place your full open hand (or both hands) in the frame of your camera or laptop screen. Think about connecting to other people beyond the border of your screen.
Play with the gesture. Try pointing your fingers downwards, try upwards, try touching one side of the frame, now try the other side.
STEP 3: Say to the camera “¿A dónde vamos?” (English Translation: “Where are we going?)
STEP 4: Answer out loud: “We go together” (Spanish Translation: “Vamos juntos”)
